The border between creative writing and the visual arts in general has become blurred, how the different media – words, images, photos, sounds, videos, interaction with the public combined to produce new works of art that are difficult to categorize according to traditional criteria.

  1. As the screen replaces the page as a form through which we read, we are also encountering creative writing in a more visual form, A ‘kinetic’ experience for the viewer – interacting on a new level with a piece of writing.
  2. The use of algorithmic constraints is expanded – from the rules of rhyme in poetry to rules set by computer , a form of AI intelligence?
  3. Concept of authorship has been challenged – now that ‘anyone’ with no formal background or education in creative writing can write a blog, or publish a story on-line, does this dumb down our output?
  4.  Artists now have more technology to use to generate and manipulate text, coined ‘Multimedia artists’
  5. It can be read by many more people than would have access to it in physical form.
  6. It can continue to survive past the life of the story-teller or physical script, and survives in many places digitally at once (downloads/websites/blogs/links
  7.   It is readily transported and can be easily accessed when and wherever it is require and enjoyed in private, even if you are somewhere public. I.e. a train/plane/waiting room.
  8. Digital mediums are susceptible and you are never really 100% sure who has written the text or if the text is the original document, or if it has been edited it can be subject to electronic failure, it lacks time to reflect and the text could be altered/changed/edited by anyone that comes into contact with it leading to the tone of the text being lost and susceptible to personal interpretation. The same text can
  9. The story may not have all the information before its published to the population (newspapers/social media/blogs) resulting in conclusions and assumptions being made.
  10. Finally a personal story last year I went to Haverfordwest University where I met many young people who had lost the ability to read, due to using a computer screen all the time which they found tiring, so they skimmed the pages. One of the young lads admired my ability to read a large number of books and to absorb the information in it, I was able to show him how to start reading by buying a paperback and reading only a set amount each day and reflecting on what he read, and then increasing that amount until he was reading for several hours a day- it may have only (well actually I love the books) been Game of Thrones but it was a start.
